Alexandre Geniez was the fastest on the roads of Kigali this Sunday, clinching the Tour du Rwanda prologue, and the Team’s first win of the season.
A successful prologue for the Team
Alexandre Geniez, who joined TotalEnergies last year, won his first victory with the Team by covering the 4-kilometer course in 4’41”. The cyclist from the south of France beat the Colombian Jhonatan Restrepo (on the Drone Hopper-Androni Giocattoli team) by six seconds, and our own neo-pro Sandy Dujardin by seven seconds, in driving rain. Thanks to his performance that day, it was our climber’s turn to wear the yellow jersey awarded to the leader in the general ranking. But keeping hold of the jersey (won last year by Cristian Rodriguez) will be no mean feat…
“I’m really delighted”
“I’m so happy to have secured the team’s first win! 2021 was a bit of a difficult year for me, so it’s a pleasure to get back on track to winning. Incidentally, I made a small bet with my sports manager, Lylian Lebreton. We bet a dinner that I would win here. It’s been taken care of,” smiles Alexandre. “The effort required for this prologue suited me well. I was hugely motivated. The Tour de Rwanda is a wild race where it’s difficult to control the peloton. That will make it difficult to keep hold of the yellow jersey. We’ll see what happens over the next few days! I know that the team will have new opportunities to shine.”
